I rättegången i New York åtalades Trump på 34 punkter för bokföringsbrott och döms på samtliga punkter. Trump själv hävdar att rättegången är en del i häxjakten på honom och ett sätt att försöka stoppa att han blir återvald i presidentvalet senare i år. Även bland allmänheten blev det starka reaktioner.
Genom domen blir Trump den första amerikanska expresidenten att förklaras skyldig till brott.
– Detta var en riggad, skamlig rättegång, jag är en väldigt oskyldig man, kommenterade Trump efteråt och konstaterar att det är folket som avgör i valet i november.
Trump påstås ha beordrat utbetalningar till personer som hotade att gå ut med känslig information om honom i samband med presidentvalskampanjen 2016.

Vad straffet blir meddelas den 11 juli. Trump riskerar fängelse men kan också få villkorligt straff. Trumps advokater kommer med största sannolikhet att överklaga.
Reaktionen bland främst konservativa men även andra är att domen utgör ännu ett exempel på hur Trump förföljs politiskt och att Demokraterna gått för långt i sin häxjakt på en politisk motståndare. Samtidigt kan domen öka stödet för Trump ännu mer då den bekräftar att det är han mot etablissemanget som försöker tysta honom.
