Folklig ilska när EU sänder kondoleanser till Iran

Efter att den iranske presidenten omkom i en helikopterolycka i helgen firade många iranier att de blivit av med en framträdande person i den förtryckande islamistiska diktaturen. Från EU lät det dock annorlunda, vilket upprört många.

Det var på söndagen som president Ebrahim Raisi, med smeknamnet ”Slaktaren från Teheran”, omkom i en helikopterkrasch i nordvästra Iran. Förutom presidenten omkom även utrikesminister Hossein Amir Abdollahian och provinsens guvernör Malek Rahmati.

Efter Raisis frånfälle är det nu förste vicepresidenten Mohammad Mokhber som tillfälligt tar över den rollen, men vem som på längre sikt tillträder som landets nye president är oklart.

Dödsbeskedet fick iranier både i Iran och runtom i världen att fira. Medan iranska statliga medier stoppade sändningarna för att visa att böner som hölls för Raisi, var det en desto mer glädjefull stämning som rådde bland iranier på sociala medier och i många iraniers hem:

EU beklagar sorgen

Medan många iranier var lättade och firade, lät det annorlunda från flera EU-toppar.

Efter att olyckan först blev känd meddelade Janez Lenarčič, EU-kommissionär för humanitärt bistånd och krishantering, att man ställde unionens resurser till förfogande. I inlägget lade han till hashtaggen ”#EUSolidarity”:

Efter att uttalandet inte mottogs väl följde Lenarčič upp med ett nytt meddelande dagen därpå:

Och från Josep Borrell Fontelles, Europeiska unionens höga representant för utrikes frågor och säkerhetspolitik, kom kondoleanser:

Många ifrågasatte EU:s svar på olyckan och ansåg att det var olämpligt med tanke på de brott mot mänskliga rättigheter som islamistdiktaturen ligger bakom liksom det fortsatta och pågående förtrycket.
